Sprite Lab
Draw and recolour Ember's and Delve's pixel art, frame by frame, play it in the game, and download it in the format the games ship.
Last updated
Sprite Lab opens a game's pixel art (Ember's or Delve's) and lets you change any of it.
Drawing
| Tool | Key | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Pencil | B | Paints one pixel, or a line as you drag |
| Fill | F | Fills a patch of one colour, edge to edge |
| Erase | E | Makes pixels transparent |
| Pick | I | Takes the colour of the pixel you click |
The right mouse button always erases. With the keyboard, focus the picture, move the cursor with the arrow keys, and press Space or Enter to use the tool. Ctrl+Z undoes and Ctrl+Y redoes.
Colours
The palette shows every colour the art uses, plus Transparent. Choose one, then:
- Change this colour recolours it everywhere it is used, in every sprite at once;
- Add colour adds a new one, which you can then change.
Frames and sprites
- Frames are the pictures of one sprite, such as the steps of a run. Duplicate frame copies the current one, Mirror flips it left to right, and Remove frame takes it out. Animations that use the frames keep showing the same pictures.
- A frame that is the only one a sprite or an animation has can't be removed, and the lab says why.
- New sprite adds a blank sprite, 1 to 64 pixels on each side.
- Animations lists the animations that use the sprite, playing at the game's speed. To change them, use Animation Lab.
Ready to play?
The game can draw your art as long as every sprite it uses keeps its size and all its frames. Anything you haven't drawn, or have removed, is drawn from the game's own art. The panel lists anything that stops the game drawing yours. Play test switches the game to your art and opens it; switch back from the game's menu.
Files
- Download saves the art as
ember-art.jsonordelve-art.json, in the sprite sheet file format. - Import opens a sprite sheet file.
- Allow Cognivo to use this saves your permission in the file. If you send the file to Cognivo, it may be used in a game. Without it, nothing you make is used.
- Reset to Ember's art (or Delve's) goes back to the game's own art. Undo brings yours back.
Nothing is saved until you change something. After that, your work is saved in this browser as you go.
