Duel

One friend, one private link. Whoever opens it first takes the other seat, and you can move while you wait.

Chess, with three minutes on the clock for each move.

Tournament

A group, one link, a random bracket. Every match in a round is played at the same time.

Room size

Start whenever at least 3 are in. Odd numbers are fine: byes are drawn at random.

How tournaments work

A tournament is a knockout bracket for a group, run from one room with one link. Choose Open a tournament, then a game and a size: up to 4, 8, 16 or 32 players. Share the room's link with everyone who wants to play. People join with an optional name, shown only to the others in the same room, and nobody needs an account.

A room is private unless its host chooses to list it, which shows it under Open tournaments with only its game and how many people have joined.

The host starts the tournament once at least three people have joined. Players are paired at random, and if the number of players doesn't fill the bracket, some get a bye and go through to the next round without playing. Everyone in the room can follow the whole bracket: every pairing, by name, the byes, and who has won.

Every match in a round is played at the same time, and the next round starts when they have all finished. Each match is an ordinary live game with a three-minute move clock. A match waits for both players to open it before its clock starts, and a player who doesn't arrive within five minutes loses it, so the bracket keeps moving.

Finished and abandoned tournament rooms are deleted 30 days after they end. For a single game against one person, Play a friend gives you a private link instead.
